Shrikant Sharma is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA. He is a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Mathura Constituency. He was elected by defeating his nearest rival by over 1 lakh votes. He is the Power Minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh. The saffron party has again fielded him from the Mathura assembly constituency for the upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh, amid speculations of UP CM Yogi Adityanath contesting from Mathura. Shrikant Sharma’s proximity to the national leadership is well-known in party circles. Due to his remarkable work as a National Executive member of the BJP Yuva Morcha, Nitin Gadkari had appointed him as the media convenor of the BJP in 2010. In the general elections of 2014, Sharma had aspired to contest from the Mathura parliamentary seat but he was passed over due to the candidacy of Bollywood star Hema Malini. He was embroiled in controversy recently when the state Congress unit sought a probe into his "visit to Dubai in 2017". Although, Sharma, claimed that he has never been on a foreign trip, and asked as to on what basis, such "baseless allegations" were being levelled against him.
